Unfolding The Relationship Between Erectile Dysfunction And Depression

The Study

Researchers led by psychiatrist Dr. Sidney Kennedy studied 184 men, who were suffering from erection problems for the past four years. These men were also suffering from minor depression.

Dr. Kennedy explained that the reason behind taking such a sample was that previous studies evaluated the impact of erectile dysfunction treatment only in men with major depression.

Two groups were formed, one was asked to undergo six weeks of treatment for erectile dysfunction with Sildenafil, while the other group was given placebo pills.

Findings of the Study

98 men who received Sildenafil experienced a 47 percent reduction in depression levels, representing a change from mild to minimal depression.

Men taking placebo pills also reported reduction in depression levels. However, it was only 26 percent and remained in the mild depression range.
