Deepika Padukone

Family

Actress and model Deepika Padukone is the daughter of prominent Indian badminton player Prakash Padukone and was born in Copenhagen, Denmark whilst her father was training there. At the age of 11 months she moved with her family to Bangalore, India. She has a younger sister, Anisha.

Education

Deepika attended Sophia High School in Bangalore and completed her schooling at Carmel College, Bangalore. She was, herself, a promising badminton player but decided against a career in the sport and whilst still in college she pursued a future in modelling having been spotted in a catwalk competition in Bangalore.

Modelling

Since her discovery she has featured in the advertising campaigns of many leading Indian brands including Liril, Close-Up toothpaste and Limca. Deepika has also won several modelling awards including the Kingfisher Fashion Awards “Model of the Year “. Shortly after receiving this honour she was selected to appear in the Kingfisher Swimsuit calendar for 2006. She was also chosen to be an international spokesperson for cosmetics company Maybelline.

Brand Ambassador

Paudukone has been selected as brand ambassador by several high profile companies. In 2003 Levi Strauss featured her in the launch of their Signature Jeans, she appeared in an advertising campaign for Nescafe coffee and she endorses Tissot timepieces, such as the ladies Tissot Desire Watch. Deepika has also featured in advertising campaigns for Sony Cybershot cameras.

Movie Career

In 2006 Deepika made her film debut in Kannada playing opposite Upendra. This was followed by a Bollywood debut in 2007 in Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om featuring Sharukh Khan. Her highly rated performance earned both critical acclaim and the Filmfare Best Female Debut award. This was followed by starring roles in Siddharth Anand’s Bechina Ae Haseeno and Chandni Chowk To China directed by Nikhil Advani. These performances were not well received by the critics but her next project Love Aaj Kal was one of the biggest blockbusters of 2009 and Deepika received her second Filmfare Award For Best Actress nomination.

Later Movie Career

Padukone appeared in five film releases in 2010 with mixed reviews including the commercial flop Karthik Calling Karthik and Kunal Kohli’s romance Break Ke Baad opposite Imran Khan in which her performance was described as the best of her career. Her 2011 credits include Prakash Jha’s melodrama Aarakshan in which she was described as coming of age as an actor. In 2012 she starred in Homi adajania’s Cocktail to great critical acclaim. Devesh Sharma of Filmfare said “She’s the soul of the film and excels in every scene”. Deepika has several new projects in the making in 2012.

Personal Life

Deepika started dating Ranbir Kapoor, her co-star in Bechina Ae Haseeno in 2008. After a rather public break-up in 2009 she kept her personal life out of the media until 2010 when she started seeing Siddharth Mallya the son of Kingfisher head Vijay Mallya. The couple split in 2012.
