How To Prepare Your BBQ For Storage

Unless you are a master of the winter season barbeque, or live in warm climate, the cold season for most means the end of the barbequing. Well managed winter storage is vital if you plan on unproblematic barbequing once the good weather returns.

Sure, there are many other chores that need taking care of in preparation for winter; the cars need to be prepped, the house needs to be organized and the garden will need sorting out, so it is a busy time, but you can ill afford to ignore the proper storage for your barbeque. As is the case with any other outdoor goods, if you leave your barbeque open to the ravages of the winter weather, it may be of no use to you when the summer comes around again.

The best option for storing a barbeque during the winter months is in an indoor space like a garage or shed. Obviously, with all of the other items that need tucking away, indoor space will be at a premium and there may not be room, especially for larger barbeques. If there is no interior space available try to find a sheltered spot in the corner of the garden to park your grill.

For outdoor storage a vinyl, or tarpaulin, cover is imperative. It is really important to secure this cover as tightly as is possible. Try to make sure there is no room for air under the cover as strong winter gales will be able to blow even the most secure covers away. As an added precaution you should try and secure the cover with some ballast (bricks, or paving slabs, will do) to keep it in place, whatever the weather.

Before securing the barbeque the first stage is to make sure it is clean. Even if the barbeque has not been used much there will be a build-up of grease and charcoal. There should be detailed instructions in the manual on cleaning, but for all barbeques the best method for cleaning is to take as much of it apart as is possible and clean each of the parts thoroughly.

After cleaning it is important that the barbeque is thoroughly dry before storage. If you are using a gas barbeque then you should fire it up one last time after cleaning. This will help with drying process and ensure that there are no leaks. For charcoal barbeques you can light some coals in a metal container or use a disposable aluminium baking tray to help with drying. It is important to allow the grill to cool completely before storage. As a final touch you should coat all of the surfaces with a light spray cooking-oil and then rub them down with a paper towel.

To ensure you don’t have any problems with rust you should use light-weight lubrication (DW40 oil) on all moving parts such as doors, drawers and hinges. After the summer you may notice some wear and tear. It is a good time to shop for any replacement parts as you can usually pick these up in sales at the end of the summer season. Once you have thoroughly oiled the grill use a wrench and screwdriver to fasten all of these parts securely.

It goes without saying that for gas barbeques it is important that the gas has been switched off properly. To do this you should disconnect the tank at the valve. Even if you are storing your barbeque outdoors you should try and find some interior storage space for your gas canister.

Following these few simple steps will not just ensure that your barbeque will be ready for action in spring, but will give you the opportunity to do some barbequing if you are a lucky enough to get a break in the weather. There is a lot to be said for winter barbequing and, for some, using the grill is a twelve month a year operation.
