Making the Transition to Nursing Home Easier

Getting old can be difficult. One of the hardest parts about getting older is realizing that you may not be able to take care of yourself anymore. If you are getting to the point in life where it is difficult to handle daily tasks on your own then it may be time to consider residency at a nursing home. Assisted living facilities are a fantastic solution for the elder. They have private rooms, full-time staff to help out when you need them, and several fun activities.

If you are currently taking care of an elderly person and are considering moving them to a nursing home, here are a few tips to help make the transition smoother:

  1. Make a Friend- When you are helping someone transition to a life in a nursing home, one of the first things that you need to make sure they have is a friend. Having someone that they can talk to, confide in, and socialize with will really help to make the new house feel like a home. When helping your loved one move into an assisted living facility, you need to work hard to reassure them that things will be okay. They may be nervous about living in a new place but having a friend can help them feel less nervous.
  2. Get a Routine- When you set up your loved one in a new home it is important to help them get settled in with a new routine. Having a routine can help a person to feel important. Knowing that you have something to do when you wake up and things that you need to accomplish can bring a sense of purpose. Before you leave your loved one on their own you need to make sure that they have a basic schedule to keep them busy.
  3. Participate in Activities- One of the most important things you can do to help your loved one make a smooth transition to a nursing home is to make sure that they participate in as many of the available activities as possible. Usually there are game nights, friendly meet and greets, and even occasional dances. Being social and participating in these events is a fantastic way to meet new friends and also fit in with your new community. Tell them not to be shy and to join in all the activities because they could be missing out on a lot of fun.

One more thing that you need to take into consideration is that there is always the possibility that nursing home abuse will occur. You need to make sure that you are visiting your loved one frequently so that you can make sure they are being treated properly.
