Is it Time to Move to an Assisted Living Community?

At some point in our lives, we have to begin planning for the future. You don’t want to move but who will you turn to when it’s time to consider assisted living in Ohio? Aging doesn’t have to be a frightening proposition, though. With proper research and realistic expectations, you’ll find the perfect assisted-living community for you.

As you would any project, jot down a list of supplies you’ll need to accomplish the task. Instead of hammers and nails, though, this project requires a list of present and future wants and needs. Here are some things to consider:

Social interaction. If you’ve recently lost a spouse, close family member or friends, being surrounded by an active, affable community will give you a feeling of home and increase your level of happiness. Also, if you love animals, you might look for an animal-friendly community. Walking a dog not only keeps you physically active but will open up a new sense of belonging as you meet other pet owners.

Helping hands. Often, as we age, we tend to forget simple things such as doing laundry, paying utility bills or daily meals. Assisted-living communities will gently pick up where you forgot and make sure your daily hygiene, bill paying and meals are taken care of – this way all you have to worry about is when Dancing with the Stars begins.

Making the rounds. Think about how many medications you take and how they all differ in dosage and administration. Over time, assisted living erases your need to track amount and ingestion of pills. Entrusting others to keep track of your medications, will allow you to relax and enjoy life a bit more.

Caregiving team. Along with your children and other family members, your caregiving team will consist of trained medical staff, clergy, body workers and perhaps even a service animal. Assisted living communities will allow you to form relationships with your caregivers, thus enhancing your life within the new living situation.

Once you’ve honed your list, you’re ready to begin sorting through brochures and, yes, web sites to select an assisted living community in Ohio. Follow your heart but maintain a level head while searching for your new home. If you begin the process before a crisis happens, you’ll be happier with your choice. Removing the immediate stress during a crisis will give you a clearer idea of the facilities’ options and how they fit into your future plans.
