2 Things to Consider Before Hiring a Bankruptcy Lawyer

There are no two ways about it; we live in tough times.  People no longer have confidence in their employers and more and more families all over the world are desperately seeking ways to stay above water financially.  Some have been able to weather the financial storm over the last few years, but there are too many who are at a point where they just aren’t’ making ends meet anymore.  If you and your family are at the end of your financial rope, so to speak, then you might be a good candidate for bankruptcy.  While bankruptcy may seem like a frightening option, it is not as bad as you might be thinking.  With the help of a bankruptcy attorney, you can relieve yourself from some of your financial hardship.  Before hiring a bankruptcy lawyer, there are a few things that you should consider:

Decide on What Type of Bankruptcy You Want to File

Many people assume that bankruptcy is the same for everyone, but it is not.  There are two types of bankruptcy that are most common: Chapter 7 bankruptcy and Chapter 13 bankruptcy.  Chapter 7 bankruptcy is probably the one that most people imagine when they think of bankruptcy.  Chapter 7 wipes out unsecured debt.  Now, Chapter 13, however, acts more like a debt consolidation program.  What you need to do is sit down with an attorney and really weigh the pros and cons of each to determine which one is best for you.

Hire a “Bankruptcy-only” Lawyer

While it may seem like an obvious conclusion to hire a lawyer who specializes in bankruptcy, there are law firms who offer bankruptcy services, but that is not the only service they provide.  It is best to go with a lawyer who handles bankruptcies only.  You don’t want the person who juggles different kinds of law.  Someone who is focused on one aspect of law will tend to me the most familiar and experienced with bankruptcies and should provide you with the best service and attention to your case.

So, once again, if you are stuck financially, don’t worry.  Bankruptcy lawyers can really help you find a solution.  Find a lawyer that is close to you and arrange a consultation.  Many of them offer consultations for free.  It is better to meet with a lawyer face-to-face as opposed to just over the phone as many companies do.    I wish you all the best!
