5 Top Cities for Nursing Careers

San Jose, California

It should come as no surprise that California, one of the largest, most populated states in the entire U.S. is home to many of the country’s best cities to build a nursing career. Topping the list is San Jose, where RNs pull in an average of $46 per hour, or about $95,000 per year for nurses that work full-time positions. San Jose is also a fairly large metropolitan city, which gives nurses plenty of potential employers, ranging from public and private hospitals to doctor’s offices and charitable organizations.

New York, New York

Metropolitan New York is one of the largest cities in the United States, and it is home to more than 21 million residents. Areas with a large population need a lot fully-functional and well-staffed medical facilities, both public and private facilities of all types like urgent care hospitals and facilities that specialize in health maintenance, like doctor’s offices. The average RN salary in the metropolitan area of New York, which includes boroughs like the Bronx and Westchester County, is just a little over $60,000 per year.

Las Vegas

Las Vegas is already a big city, but it’s one of the fastest growing markets for nurses looking to find a steady job. Las Vegas’ growth is actually due to more people moving into the city from other major metropolitan areas because of the city’s fairly low cost of living. More people moving into the area means a need for more medical facilities, which create more jobs for nurses. RNs in Las Vegas earn just a little under $50,000 per year, but with a growing market that needs employees, you may be able to get more if you have experience.

Columbus, Ohio

Columbus, Ohio may not have the glitz and glamor of New York or Las Vegas, but for many nurses that would prefer to live in a smaller city or are looking to remain near family in the middle of country, Columbus is an excellent place to work. RNs average a little over $40,000 per year, but the cost of living is considerably lower than many major cities. Government jobs and jobs in teaching hospitals are the largest source of employment for nurses in Columbus. Generally, these types of jobs provide security and stability that jobs in the private sector may not be able to offer.

Austin, Texas

Ranked as the number-one city to live and work in as a nurse by Nursing Link, Austin, Texas should be at the top of your list if you’re considering a move to pursue a job in nursing. RNs in Austin make over $41,000 per year, and the cost of living is the lowest of any city on this list. The job market in Austin is actually predicted to boom in coming years because the city is growing and new medical facilities are being built. Austin, Texas also has one of the lowest changes in unemployment rates of any city in the United States since the most recent economic recession began in December 2007.
