Canvas bags are now more popular than ever before. This is partly due to how durable they are, but is perhaps more a result of the growing awareness of environmental issues. Disposable plastic bags are not very eco-friendly, whereas reusable bags are a far better option.
Canvas is unique because its threads are tightly woven and are plain weave, which provides strength. Being so durable, canvas bags are now used by many people when they go shopping and, as mentioned above, this is due to the fact that it is good for the environment not to be using the standard shopping bags that the supermarkets provide. Another reason is that they can carry considerably more weight in them than normal supermarket carrier bags.
Canvas bags are also now so durable that they even make suitcases out of the same material. This is due to the fact that it is very strong and does not get damaged easily and can therefore protect the contents of the suitcase very well as it is loaded on and off aircraft etc. All these things are major requirements of suitcases as luggage can often get damaged in a bad quality suitcase as it is often thrown onto and off planes by airport staff with little attention paid to what is happening. With all of the other suitcases on top, there can often be a bit of damage.
Canvas bags have also been used for satchels to carry laptops around. Again, this due to the fact that it is a very good material for protecting the contents of the bag. This is especially important if it is carrying a laptop, which is obviously a very expensive and delicate item. To make a canvas case for a laptop, it has to be a lot more durable and be able to resist a lot more damage. This would have to be of a low graded weight of canvas – canvas 2 or 3. Canvas is graded in reverse order, so 3 is thicker than 9. Canvas can also be made so that it is waterproof and this again is a necessary feature when the bag contains electrical goods, like a laptop.
Due to the material involved in making canvas bags, the price of canvas is often surprisingly cheap and this allows production of such bags on a mass scale at a very cheap price. This is then reflected in the price to the customer, as canvas bags are traditionally very affordable.
