4 Reasons Why Kerrville Has the Best of the Country and the City

Kerrville, the jewel in the crown of Texas Hill Country, is the ideal place to buy a ranch. The town has many spring-pure creeks, a temperate climate and views of the Guadalupe River Valley that are beautiful enough to be a painting. It is near cities of a significant size. (Austin is two hours away, and San Antonio is only a little over one hour away.) So, if you want a fix of the excitement of city life, all you have to do is hop in the car.

The town itself, though, offers the ranch-dweller quite a lot to do. You get the peace and quiet of living in the middle of nowhere and the culture and entertainment of a cosmopolitan city. The following is a list of some of the fun things to do in the exciting town of Kerrville:

  • Folk and Wine Festivals

The Folk Festival, which has been held every year since 1972, is one of the longest running folk festivals in the country. Judy Collins, Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams and Peter, Paul, and Mary have all played at this much-loved festival, which runs for eighteen days at the end of May and beginning of June. An offshoot of the Folk Festival is the Wine and Music Festival. This festival is a great excuse to sit under the Texas stars with your arm around your loved one sipping wine and listening to lovely music.

  • Arts and Crafts

It hosts the Texas State Arts and Crafts Fair. Much of the paintings on display are western-themed and rival Georgia O’Keefe’s famous southwestern canvases. The photography, likewise, is largely Texan in theme. You will find a lot of fine nature photographs—including pictures of the king of the local trophy animals, the white-tailed buck.

  • Music Festivals

Every summer brings the Fest Out West—a music festival featuring big names and up-and-comers in the alt-country, country and Americana scenes. The festival takes place in nearby Luckenbach (a legendary town in country music circles). This year the fest boasts Joe Ely, of the influential Luckenbach band the Flatlanders and Max Stalling, rightful inheritor of the mantle of great singer-songwriters like Townes Van Zant and Guy Clark.

  • Performing Arts

It takes the performing arts seriously. Its Playhouse 2000 puts on six high-quality productions a year. Be sure to catch two classics this season: The Wizard of Oz and Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap.
