How To Protect Your Home From Smoke And Fire

It is very scary to think that around 3,000 people died in 2011 after being involved with a fire, many of these people were involved with fires in the home. In this day and age with the technology that has been invented you would think the days of being injured in house fires would be over. Every single person that died in a fire in 2011 could have been preventable if they protected their homes properly.

If you protect your home properly from a fire starting, you can be making the difference between life and death.

Smoke Alarm

The key to protecting your home and family is by having working fire/smoke alarms fitted to your home. You should have a variety of smoke alarms fitted to ensure that you are alerted as soon as possible. A smoke alarm should be fitted to each floor of your home, and any extra should be fitted in rooms that have quite a lot of electrical equipment running constantly.

A smoke alarm can really save your home and your family; it is advised that you should check that your smoke alarms are working weekly. You should also change the batteries in your smoke alarm at least once a year to make sure that it will work in an emergency.

Escape Route

At work we all know what to do if there is a fire, but what about at home? Would you really know what to do if a fire happened in your home? It is advised that you should create a fire escape route out of your home so that you can be sure what to do if a fire does happen. If there is a fire in your home, saving a few seconds and getting out the building just a little bit quicker can make the difference between life and death.

You should create two different escape routes; the first one should be to the quickest and most direct exit from your house. You should also create a backup escape route; you can use this if your main exit is blocked by a fire.

You should inform your family of the two exit routes so that if there is a fire, each family member will know what to do.

Fire Prevention

There are many different pieces of fire prevention equipment; this will include smoke alarms and fire extinguishers. If you wanted to be extra cautious in your home, you can buy a fire extinguisher for personal use. To learn more about fire prevention methods you can read the different types of fire walls to prevent fire. Most of the fire prevention systems can only be used in large industrial buildings; however some prevention methods have been made specifically for the home.
