Think About the Style

Getting the right style and fit may need more consideration than you might think. You need to take your own body shape into account; if you’re not particularly tall, a long trench coat might make you appear shorter. If you’re a little on the larger side, a jacket with three or four buttons will provide a slimming effect. You should also try to dress your age. A style which is too young for you unfortunately isn’t going to work, but at the same time a jacket designed for a man much older than yourself will also look strange.

Pick a Suitable Fabric

Choosing a fabric that will suit your requirements is very important. Your jacket needs to be tailored to suit your needs. If you’re a high-flying business type, you need a coat that will complement your suit well. If you work outside, you’re going to want to look for a practical fabric that will keep out the cold. Wool is a good choice for any eventuality as it’s both warm and stylish.

Is the Price Right?

Obviously, price is going to be one of the biggest factors when it comes to ultimately choosing your jacket. Set yourself a budget and try not to overspend. If at all possible, try to avoid jackets at the extremes of both ends of the price scale. A cut-price coat may seem like a bargain, but it’s likely to be a false economy. The chances are it will start to show signs of wear and tear quickly and will probably not be very warm either. The most expensive jackets are by no means good value for money either; you don’t want to spend a huge chunk of your hard-earned money just for a designer label.

Colour is Important

The colour of your jacket is also something to ponder. Is the coat a colour that generally suits you? It’s also worth thinking about buying a darker coloured jacket, greens, greys and blues are versatile and flattering and whilst a camelhair coat might seem like a good idea, it’s likely to get stained easily and could require a lot of cleaning if you want to keep it looking good.

Is it Practical?

It might seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget about practicality when choosing your jacket. Is the coat going to have enough pockets for everything you have to carry with you on a daily basis? Will buttons or a zip work best for you? If you spend a lot of time outdoors, does it have a hood and is it going to be waterproof? You’ll be glad you thought about these kinds of things when you have a jacket that is perfectly suited to your requirements.
