A Beautiful Kitchen, Piece by Piece

Since the beginning of civilization, the kitchen has been the center of the home.  It’s where we cook, where we eat, where we gather with those we love most.  According to a well-known real estate adage, it is one of the two rooms that can sell a house.  It is almost definitely the most used room in your home, even if it’s not in the best shape.  If your kitchen is outdated, in disrepair, or not as functional as you’d like it to be, it might be time for a renovation.  Because it’s such an important room, a kitchen renovation is almost always well spent; you’ll end up with a room you love and a room that will add significant value to your home.

Despite the inherent value and benefits of a kitchen renovation, it can be an intimidating project to take on.  A full kitchen renovation is a big financial investment; it can also cause stress and upheaval in your life.  If you’re planning on – or even just thinking about – renovating your kitchen, keep yourself from getting too overwhelmed by approaching the project one piece at a time and it will all come together.

  • Figure out what you want – Since it is such a central part of your home life, your kitchen should really work for you.  Think about how you use the space.  Are you a cooking fanatic who prepares gourmet meals?  Do you entertain a lot?  Does your family cook together?  Is it where you pay bills or clip coupons, or where your children do homework and projects?  Having a good understanding about how you need the space to function will help you determine how to arrange it.
  • Figure out how to meet your needs – A renovation is your chance to turn your room into exactly what you need.  Make a list, based on how you use the room, of your must-have features:  a workstation, a breakfast bar with seating, a built-in banquette, lots of storage, a large refrigerator, a dedicated work space for cooking.  This planning stage is the time for you to turn your needs into reality.
  • Make it your own – This room where you spend so much time should be not only functional, but beautiful too.  There are literally thousands of ways to personalize your kitchen, from materials and finishes to the perfect hardware and details.  If you’re overwhelmed by all the options, look to the rest of your home for inspiration; carry your favorite style through your kitchen with your color palette, cabinet style, and hardware.  Whether you need task lighting or want to add dimension, under cabinet lighting is a great way to make your kitchen feel warm, welcoming, and truly finished.

Make the center of your home a space that you love, and the place where you and your family love to be.  With the right plan, a good contractor, and the perfect finishing touches, you’ll have a beautiful and functional kitchen.
