What Exactly Is Home Automation?

Home automation is the use of new technologies to control many aspect of a house through a central digital interface. Automating a home often involves installing a central controller and many peripheral devices and sensors that can interact with appliances, lights and other systems. Homeowners can control the different components within the home through a mobile device, computer interface or a special control panel from any location.

There are currently many different technologies available for home automation. Some systems use an array of wireless terminals mounted near different appliances to send signals to a small central unit that is accessible through a mobile device using a special app. Others use the electrical wiring in the home to establish a low-voltage network between outlets. Several systems require wiring inside of the walls between components and the central controller. The central controller is like a small computer that receives commands from the homeowner and then communicates with external modules causing different items in the home to turn on, turn off or change state.

Control Options

The different home automation systems can be configured to control nearly any appliance or device in the home. This includes the thermostat that controls the heating system, the lights in different rooms and even the locks on a door. Comprehensive setups permit owners to use a single mobile device and app to control a stereo, television and other media components without requiring different remote controls or physical proximity to the units. Manufacturers are coming up with new automated systems and components every year allowing for systems that control pet feeders, curtains and bathtub faucets.

A home automation system gives anyone control of the wired parts of the house from nearly any location. Some systems are limited to a certain range outside of the house while others receive wireless or Internet signals that can be sent from any location where there is Internet access. This allows a homeowner to activate the heat in the winter just a few minutes before arriving home. It can also be used to run sophisticated programs that activate different components in sequence to create a relaxing atmosphere. The system will help to save energy and will make living in the house much more convenient. Integrated apps often have access to many devices such as digital video recorder so that homeowners can schedule to record shows even when not in the house.

Many modern automation systems can be integrated into a home security setup. This gives homeowners the ability to review live cameras and sensor data from inside and outside of the home. This provides peace of mind while at work or on vacation. It also makes it possible to adjust the thermostats or curtains in the house in order to achieve comfortable indoor temperatures that can be monitored. Controlling locks, lights and garage doors from a single app makes securing a house at night before bed very simple and stress-free.
