Top Attractions To Visit in London’s Olympic Park

In the summer of 2012, London will be playing host to the Olympic Games, attracting attention from millions of people all over the world. Starting on July 27th, the sporting event will see approximately 10,500 athletes jostle for the prestige of winning global medals, proving that they are amongst the best sports people in the world. If you are lucky enough to have tickets and are flying to Heathrow Airport so that you can see the games in person, then there are few attractions that you shouldn’t miss when you’re enjoying the Olympic park.

Whilst tickets for The Games have been like gold dust, you may be one of the lucky thousands who have gained entry for this milestone occasion. There’s a lot more to see and do than simply attending your specified sporting event however, and the Olympic Park has many attractions that you will want to discover.

The Olympic Park has been specially built for the occasion, and the 200 hectare site in East London has been filled with attractions and landmarks to enjoy. In addition to the beautiful and architecturally chic new buildings such as the Veledrome, the Aquatics Centre and the Copper Box, there are some great attractions to explore. The Olympic Park has been carefully landscaped, and has brought the British countryside into the city by means of wildflower meadows and trees. The River Lea serenely meanders through the park too, offering a beautiful natural setting for the modern sporting venues to be set amongst.

One structure which shouldn’t be missed off a tour of the park is the Orbit. This specially designed sculpture was created by Anish Kapoor, and it rises 115 metres into the London skyline. However, the sculpture is far more than something to look at, and visitors can take an elevator ride to the viewing platform 85 metres above the ground for stunning sights across the city.

There’s also the ability to shop whilst you’re in the park, and the London 2012 Megastore is the place to find souvenirs and memorabilia for your time at The Games. Gifts range from quintessential British tea cups, to key rings, caps and posters. Limited edition items are also available for sale, providing a huge variety of gifts and souvenirs so that you can remember your trip for a lifetime.

With the London Olympic Games almost here, the city buzz is already beginning. With the British capital ready to put on the show of its life, all that remains is for the throngs of spectators to arrive and start celebrating. And, if you’re headed for the Olympic Park this summer, then be sure to maximise your stay and enjoy some of the sights away from the spectacular venues.
