How To Travel the World While Working Online

The idea of leaving everything behind and travelling the world is one that many of us have daydreamed about at one time or another. Of course most of us are not hotel heiresses or independently wealthy, so getting the funds together to do so is simply not an option. After all, putting aside travel costs and living expenses for world travel would take a significant chunk out of most people’s budgets.

However, if you work online, all you need to do is bring a laptop and stay in areas with an internet connection and you can pay for your travel on the go. Before you book those flights, make sure to bear these tips in mind.

What about your Possessions?

The less you bring with you, the easier your travel will be. Most of us have quite a few possessions, after all. If you own your own home you could consider sub-letting it as a furnished property while you are away, but even still your personal items and clothing will need to go somewhere.

Look into self storage options for the possessions you will want to leave behind. Make sure to keep your payments up as you don’t want to come home to find that your possessions have been auctioned off to pay for back charges.

Take Control of your Finances

Before you go, you will want to make sure you can take care of your financial affairs while out of the country. Make sure you have set up your accounts and bills for online and phone bill paying. You will probably want to inform your bank of your travel plans before you go so they do not put a hold on your card due to foreign activity that they might think is suspicious. A post-office box can be handy for any paper bills and letters you may receive.

Prepare for your Work

Your work can, of course, still be conducted online, but it is important to be aware of the changes that may occur while you are travelling. Having an emergency fund to take care of your laptop should it break or be stolen should be a priority.

Remember that you will be changing time zones and take care to factor that in to your deadlines. Be aware that internet connections worldwide may not be as reliable as you are used to – don’t leave your work until close to the deadline or you may find you cannot upload it.

If you work online and don’t have family commitments that require you to stay at home, then taking advantage of your flexibility to travel may well be the best decision you ever make. Not only will you memories that will last a lifetime, you’ll also grow as a person.
