What Is A Skin Pigmentation Condition And How Is It Treated?

This post answers the following questions

1) How to treat a skin pigmentation?
2) What is skin pigmentation?
3) How to remove birth marks?
4) What is the cause of vitiligo
5) Why dermabrasion is the most severe treatment?

The top layer of the skin is known as the epidermis and it is in this layer of skin that skin color is developed. Skin pigmentation is the result of melanin that is produced by the melanocyte cells in the epidermis layer. Just like with any other organ in the body, abnormalities or malfunctioning can occur. The only difference is an imperfection in the skin is noticeable by other people.

Vitiligo is considered a hypopigmentation disorder and is caused by the melanocytes cells not functioning properly. When this happens the skin will lose it color in uneven patches. The most common areas affected are around the mouth or eyes, the back of the hands and elbows or knees.

Melasma is considered a hyperpigmentation disorder that is caused by the overproduction of melanin. When this happens, irregular size patches of dark skin appear. This commonly occurs with scars, incision sites and abrasions of the skin. It can also be caused by a hormonal imbalance, the aging process and overexposure to the sun.

The most common pigmentation treatment for vitiligo is a prescription for photo-sensitive creams that can be obtained by any aesthetic clinic. Quite often if the results are not satisfactory an aesthetic doctor will be required to stimulate melanin production with phototherapy and psoralen medication.

The most common pigmentation treatment for melasma is an anti aging cream that contains hydroquinone, retinoic acid, and mild hydrocortisone. If anti aging creams do not achieve the proper results there are more extensive treatments that can be performed.

Laser treatments can be performed at an aesthetic clinic and are used for various skin conditions such as birth marks and sun spots. There are different types of lasers and an aesthetic doctor will decided which treatment is best for the skin condition.

A chemical peel treatment can be used for numerous conditions as well as an anti aging treatment. An aesthetic clinic will apply a chemical to the area that requires pigmentation treatment. This chemical will make the skin blister and peel off, regenerating new skin with the proper pigmentation.

Dermabrasion (surgical skin planning) is the most severe treatment and requires an aesthetic doctor to perform it. During this procedure the affected area is “frozen” and then the doctor abrasively removes the affected skin and the new unaffected layer of skin replaces it. This can be used for such conditions as wrinkles, age spots, pigmentation disorders and scars.
