Being a couch potato can lead to obesity, and obesity is a serious health hazard that leads to many kinds of diseases, most especially, ones that target our heart. Obese people also have lower lifespans than those who are healthy and are more likely to be diabetic and be prone to diseases and respiratory problems. These reasons should be enough for you to think twice about your daily "Couch Potato" habits. One tip that would help you move your body around is exercising, buy yourself a treadmill, a stationary bike or some weights, lift weights while watching T.V so as to avoid eating junk foods. Open your eyes to the bitter truth that "relaxing" as what you call it is hazardous, and you'd be better off doing something much more relaxing and rewarding other than watching T.V and eating lots and lots of unhealthy food.

Couch potatoes are an unhealthy lifestyle generally associated with middle age, lack of work, computer-based work, or just plain laziness. One must avoid falling into this trap simply for the sake of his health and well being as well as other people in his life that are concerned about him. It is easier said than done but the first step is having to think a positive outlook on life and think about good self esteem to bolster confidence. This mentality also might lead to a more active lifestyle. Once confidence comes up,the individual might then turn up to going outside learning about other things like sports, exercise, work related activities that are less stressful and general healthy living. It just a matter of mind and self respect to avoid falling into the traps of being a couch potato.

The medical term for the lifestyle of a couch potato is sedentary lifestyle. It refers to the kind of lifestyle with irregular physical activity or no physical activity at all. It is health hazard because it can contribute to many preventable causes of death like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, colon cancer, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and lipid disorder. I am a couch potato. I spend eight (8) hours in front of the computer because of the nature of my work and I watch TV when I get home. Right now, I make sure to do 15 minutes exercise in the morning (walking, jumping, stretching), I also take the stairs instead of elevator as much as I could, and during weekend I dance while watching my favorite music video on TV.

A lot of people nowadays are "couch potatoes'. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is because many of us think that we deserve to have a break at our homes after a hard days work, thus we slouch in front of the tv or computer and food bingeing instead of doing something. However, since this is not very healthy then maybe we can put a limit on the number of hours that we spent in front of the tv or computer. Then have a mindset of doing something proactive like doing some chores around the house, or maybe working out for a few minutes or spending some time with the neighbors or other stuff that takes us away from sitting down and stuffing ourselves with food. It is also helpful if we have a strong will to avoid being a couch potato.

being a couch potato is not a very good habit in a person especially for men. most reported cases of health hazard on being a couch potato are men.

husbands tends to sit in front of the television with a handful of junk foods while watching their favorite sport series. this is one reason while men has a high risk of getting bad health.

women is the one who cooks and do chores which serves as their exercise unlike men who just sits there and do actually nothing.

Some studies have said that the "couch potato lifestyle" is a serious health hazard to its practitioners; in the United Kingdom, a plan of the Prime Minister's Strategy Unit tried attempts "to combat the couch potato culture" to "[improving the U.K.'s] international sporting performance."

Studies presented at the 2003 meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine suggested that there could be a genetic basis for the "couch potato lifestyle".

Research suggests that being a couch potato could make a person a decade older biologically than someone who is physically active.
