Growing Old- How You Can Maintain Happiness

When we are young, we don’t have a care in the world. Children spend all day happily playing, without negative mind-sets or thoughts. The only thing they seem to care about is what time they get sent to bed! So why is it then, that as we grow older, that this happiness seems to diminish? We finish school, and go out in search for life partners and careers, as our mothers and fathers did before us. In doing so, life takes over and we forget to have fun. It becomes less about having a laugh, and more about making sure you can pay the bills and pleasing everybody around us. Does it have to be like this? I think not! I think it is time to take a look at our lives and see where things went wrong, and how we can improve them.

Happiness is Simply a State of Mind – Change it!

It’s true; happiness is merely a state of mind, when you learn to recognise that, you start noticing what causes you to become unhappy, and you can start fixing it. For some people, that might mean breaking the mould, doing something different, and interrupting your routines. Routines are boring, and boredom is often one of the main causes of unhappiness. Get a hobby, find new interests, and find new things to do or be passionate about. In doing so, you will keep your mind active, which is often all that it takes to change your state of mind and start gaining happiness.

Keep Your Mind Active

An active mind is a happy mind. When we have lots of things to do, there is never enough time to feel unhappy or depressed with life. If you keep your mind active, you can also prevent one of the most common mental illnesses that the elderly face- Alzheimer’s. By keeping your mind fit and active, you ensure that your brain doesn’t start forgetting things. Playing games or tasks such as Crosswords, quizzes or mathematical questions is a great way of doing this.

Growing old doesn’t have to mean growing that we start become unhappy. Keep your body and your mind active and it will go a long way towards preventing it. There is still a lot to look forward to, worrying about the inevitable will get you nowhere, so start enjoying life today and stop worrying about the future.
