6 Ways to Greatly Improve the Planet

Every day, we put our planet’s health in jeopardy. The trash we put in landfills, the toxins we put into the air—all of this has a negative effect on our planet. Though you may only be one person, there are certain things you can do to help improve our planet, all of which can make Earth a better place for you and your future.

Educate yourself.

The more you learn about helping your planet, the more you can do to actually help it. Join groups like Greenpeace or read popular blogs or websites like TreeHugger to help educate yourself on issues that are affecting our planet and what you can do to help. Plus, the more you know, the more you can help others make the best green decisions for our planet.

Ditch the car.

Instead of driving your car around, opt to walk or ride your bike when possible. Walking and bike riding don’t use any energy or cause any pollutants. If you need to travel far, replace your old gas guzzling car with a more eco friendly option, such as the Chevy Volt or the Nissan Leaf, two electric cars that produce less emissions than traditional cars.

Recycle and reuse.

Make sure that you’re recycling anything you possibly can. This helps keep unnecessary waste out of our landfills. Plus, it allows items to be made without having to manufacture new materials. You can also try to reuse items. For example, instead of throwing out that milk container, see if you can use it for something else, such as a flower pot. You can also reuses coffee containers as mini storage bins. The more you can reuse items, the better our planet will be.

Use less water.

If we continue to waste water, there won’t be any left in the future. Make sure that you’re smart about your use of water. Create a rain barrel and use the water you collect from the rain to water plants or wash cars. You also need to make sure that you’re taking shorter showers, only running your dishwasher or washing machine when it’s full and turning the faucet off while you brush your teeth.

Invest in solar power.

If you are planning on remodeling your home or building a new one, make sure that you opt for some renewable energy sources. Ditch the oil and gas based energy items and opt for solar powered or wind powered instead.

Use local products.

Make sure that you do all of your shopping locally. When you purchase items online, they’re shipped to you, and the shipping methods place toxins and emissions into the air and create waste by packaging your product up. Buying locally doesn’t involve any packaging or shipping, and it also benefits those companies that are in your community.

Making green decisions is important to ensure the sustainability of our planet. If you can make these adjustments in your lifestyle, you will be doing your part to keep our planet alive and well for the future.
