Can The BlackBerry Torch 9860 Hold A Torch To The HTC One S?

The HTC One S and the BlackBerry Torch 9860 appear to be very similar handsets. As BlackBerry experiment with handsets that do not feature their signature QWERTY keyboard, they begin to resemble more the other handsets that are available on the market. Each of these has a touchscreen and only a few physical buttons.

Operating Systems

The operating system on the HTC handset is Android, which is a popular choice. There are many apps available for the Android phones. The operating system on the BlackBerry handset is their own operating system, but this should not put users off. This particular system has earned plaudits from reviewers and users will find that they are able to do just as much on the BlackBerry as they can on the HTC with the variety of apps that are on offer.

Memory

When it comes to internal memory the HTC has more to offer. Neither of the handsets has been given a slot for a microSD card so the user is relying on that memory included on the phone. The HTC has 16GB and the BlackBerry has just 4GB. BlackBerry users are traditionally business users so are less likely to want to store music and photos, so this could have influenced the decision, although a touchscreen handset is more likely to attract other users and they are likely to be disappointed with this.

Internet Use

While traditional Blackberry handsets have been aimed at those who want to use email on the go, this handset makes it far easier to surf the net and the screen is larger, clearer and sharper than those seen on other BlackBerry phones. This puts the handset on a par with the HTC handset which has a similar size screen that also has these qualities.

Camera

The camera on the HTC One S has 8 megapixels, a built in flash, a front-facing camera for video calls and the option for recording video. Users who believe that the camera is an essential part of the handset may be disappointed with that on the BlackBerry Torch 9860. It has 5 megapixels, video recording options and a flash but there is no front-facing camera. However, when it comes to image quality, neither of these handsets will disappoint the average user.

Internet

Connection options are also varied for each handset. The HTC phone has 3G and Wi-Fi among other options and so does the BlackBerry Torch so that users can connect quickly and easily while on the go. Other options include GPS and Bluetooth.

Decision Time

BlackBerry’s handset does not have the same level of recognition from reviewers as the HTC handset. This could be because this particular handset is a departure from the usual design, but this is not something that should worry the user very much as the handset still has plenty to offer the user. However, it may not be the best handset for those who want to store a lot of photos and music, making this the one disappointing feature of the phone but most users would be happy with either of these handsets.

Phil Turner thinks the Blackberry Torch is looking like a great choice of phone.
