The Five Largest High Schools in America

The average high school in America has between 1,100 and 1,500 students. However, there are a number of schools that have a lot more students than the average high school in America. Below are five of the largest high schools in America:

1.) Brooklyn Technical High School

Brooklyn Technical High School is located in Brooklyn, New York. This school currently has 8,706 students and 217 full-time teachers. Not only is Brooklyn Technical High School the largest high school in America, but it is also one of the most selective high schools. Students who want to attend this school are required to submit an application. They are also required to take the Specialized High School Admission Test, or SHSAT.

Additionally, Brooklyn Technical High School requires students to pick a major. Chemical engineering, bio-medical engineering, law, media communications, mathematics, biological sciences and social science research are some of the majors that students have to choose from at this school.

2.) Fort Hamilton High School

Fort Hamilton High School is located in Brooklyn, New York. It is home to 7,805 students and 192 teachers. Fort Hamilton High School is known for its academic excellence. This school offers a number of advanced placement courses including, art history, biology, calculus, physics and English literature. This school also offers classic Greek, Spanish, French and Italian language courses.

Approximately 70 percent of the students who attend Fort Hamilton High School graduate, and 57 percent of those students attend college.

3.)Tottenville High School

Tottenville High School is located in Staten Island, New York. It is home to 7,700 students and 197 teachers. Students are required to earn a total of 44 credits before they graduate. They must also pass all of their courses with at least a 65. In addition to a challenging curriculum, this school also offers a variety of extracurricular activities. Some of those activities include baseball, basketball, cross country, cheerleading, marching band, student publications and math team.

4.) Edward R. Murrow High School

Edward R. Murrow High School is located in Brooklyn, New York. This school has 7,609 students. Edward R. Murrow High School offers a variety of business, fine arts, health, social sciences, math and English courses. This school also has courses for students with mental and physical disabilities. The goal of Edward R. Murrow High School’s special education program is to help students learn in a less restrictive environment.

5.) Francis Lewis High School

Francis Lewis High School has 7,400 and 209 teachers. It is located in Queens, New York. This school is known for setting high academic standards. That is one of the reasons that this school has one of the highest graduation rates in this country. In fact, nearly 80 percent of the students who attend this school graduate. The average high school graduation rate is around 75 percent. The vast majority of the students who graduate from Francis Lewis High School attend college. Any student can be admitted to Francis Lewis High School, but priority is given to students who live in Queens.
