The History of Yankee Candle

History of Yankee Candle

Here is a true American success story of a teenager who turned one candle into a billion dollar company. In the Christmas of 1969, 17-year-old Mike Kittredge was so low on funds that he could not buy his mother a Christmas gift. Instead he decided to melt down some old crayons from the house to make her a homemade candle. When he finished, a neighbour took a shine to this gift and convinced him to sell it to him. With the money, Mike then bought enough crayons for two candles, one of which he gave to his mother, and the other one he sold.

From that single candle Mike started Yankee Candle, and since then it has become the world’s most recognised brand in the candle business. With more than 300 Yankee Candle retail stores, approximately 15,000 store locations and many international distributors, the business has gone from strength to strength.

Yankee Candle was founded in South Hedley, Massachusetts, with the help of high school friends Donald Maclver and Susan Obremski. In 1993, after a cancer scare, Kittredge sold Yankee Candle to Frostman Little for an impressive $500m. Then following a huge success in sales and expansion was sold again in 2007 to private equity group Madison Dearborn Partners LLC for a staggering $1.6b.

From humble beginnings in America, this brand has rocketed to one of the largest candle companies in the world, and still to this day the majority of Yankee Candles are made by master chandlers (candle makers) in Massachusetts, USA in the advanced manufacturing site. The care and love taken to create the first Yankee Candle is included over 40 years on in every product from the Yankee Candle brand.

This company offers an expansive selection of products that will fragrance your home and car beautifully. Yankee Candle provide popular reed diffusers, Yankee Candle electric home plug in, tart burners, Yankee Jar Candles and gels and oils, so you can choose which suits your scent needs the most.
