If you are new to SEO and Internet Marketing in general, ranking your website in Google is not as easy as you may think. It is wise to hire an SEO Consultant but if you do not have the capital or budget to hire one, here are some basic tips to get your website to the first page, and even to the top of the search engines. This may take some time (generally up to 3 months for a new site) but it is well worth the investment. You are in business for the long-term anyhow so there is no use in trying to rush things or trying to cheat the system.
If you have a new website, it is a good idea to get out a Word document or Excel spreadsheet and map out your website’s structure with your services and offerings:
- Service #1
- Service #2
- Service #3
Once this is done, research the best possible key-phrases for each particular page / service and include those key-phrases or locations within your content (make sure not to be too spammy). You can do your research by using the Google Keyword Tool and be sure to select “exact match” when doing your search. Once you have determined your structure, worked out your keywords and written your content, it is time to upload the content and set your meta data.
- Titles – 70 character long title for that page. (Include primary keyword once)
- Descriptions – 156 character long description about your service (Include primary keyword once)
- Keywords – No longer needed or used by Google.
If you are using WordPress, you should choose the WordPess SEO plugin by Yoast. Search it in your plugins section of WordPress, install and activate it. Once you have your pages setup and have the basic optimization elements in place, you need to setup a basic internal linking structure, create a robots.txt file and upload a sitemap. If you are using WordPress, this is really easy too. Yoast will automatically generate a sitemap for you at /sitemap_index.xml, SEO Smart Links+ is a great free plugin for internal linking and below is a sample robots.txt file for WordPress.
- User-agent: *
- Disallow: /wp-admin/
- Disallow: /wp-includes/
- Disallow: /wp-content/uploads/
- Disallow: /wp-content/plugins/
- Disallow: /wp-content/themes/
- Disallow: /wp-content/cache/
- Disallow: /trackback/
- Disallow: /tag/
- Disallow: /comments/
- Disallow: /cgi-bin/
- Disallow: /xmlrpc.php
- Sitemap: http://www.yoursite.com/sitemap_index.xml
Once you have completed the on-page optimization of your website, it is now time to move onto the off-page side of things. This includes building links back to your websites from relevant websites and blogs. Different types of link building include the following:
- Directory Submission
- Article / Ezine Submissions
- Guest Blogging
- Web 2.0 Posts (Squidoo, HubPages, Etc)
- Blog Commenting
- Social Profiles (Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Etc)
- Social Bookmarking
- Forum Posting
- Press Releases
These are all important elements in any link building and SEO campaign however, it can be a fairly time consuming process, especially if you don’t know what you are doing so it is probably best to outsource these services through an external link building company that offer the above services. Search for an end-to-end link building company or even search for the individual services in Google too. Don’t go past the first page when choosing link builders as if they cant get their own website to the first page, it is more than likely that they cant do it for yours either.
Tips To Take Over The Top 5
Taking over the top 5 in Google’s search results is all about rejuvenation of your existing links and building new, super high authority links. Basic directory submissions and basic guest posts on low authority blogs will just not cut it, especially for high competition keywords. These need to be created on blogs and websites within your niche or relevant to your topic that have a strong standing in Google. The bigger and better the website, the more juice Google will give to you and the better your rankings will be.
- Link Rejuvenation – Build links to your links (picks your best backlinks and build links to them)
- Authority Backlinks – Build higher quality links on industry authority websites (guest posts etc)
In closing, don’t just start an SEO campaign or attempt to rank your website without having a strategy in place, do some research and background work before you get started, use specialist link builders to outsource the work and leverage your time better and remember, slow and steady wins the race.
