Jumpstart Your Contracting Business

At the start of a job (or business) people usually work while on an adrenaline high. It seems that 24 hours is not enough to accomplish everything you want. You are like that famous bunny that goes on and on and on with his work. Then you reach a point when you just don’t want to get out of bed. You think of giving up but then it’s too late to turn back. Here are some tips to get you out of that rut.

  • It is about the money. Admit it. Money is a huge motivator. It’s the primary reason why we work. Think about the money you’re going to make if you get up and start working again. Think about what that money is for (a nice vacation, a new car, a new house?) Think hard then get up!
  • Eyes on the prize. What do you wish to accomplish in the next 6 months? The next year? 5 years? Focus on that goal.
  • Take each day at a time. Set a clear goal for each day. Make it realistic. Make sure that you will be able to finish it at the end of your ‘shift’.
  • Break it down. Break down your tasks into workable levels. You will easily feel overwhelmed when faced with a big project.
  • Avoid burning out. It’s easy to burn out when you are working for yourself. With all the work that needs to be done, one day you might just give up. Take some time to relax and cool your mind.
  • Take some time off. Do not feel guilty if you need a break. Even the best minds in business need some time off. Rest your mind, your body and your spirit then go back to the game.
  • Be positive. Always look at the brighter side of things. Sure it’s a bumper sticker but have you really looked at the other side? Can you see beyond your problems?
  • Take a step back. Look at your work (or problem) from another perspective. Now formulate a new strategy. Focus on this new solution and it will surely get you going.
  • Count your blessings. Think of your many achievements. What have you done so far? And what can you do still?
  • Wakeup and give thanks. Think about things you are thankful for or just say thank you 7 times each day. Having an attitude of gratitude makes you feel lighter and happier.

Everyone falls into a rut at one point or another. The key is to never give up and continue to find things that motivate you and keep you going until you reach your goal.
