How To Create A Survey

Individuals and businesses often make use of surveys for a variety of different subject areas but the general reason behind this is generally to find out how well something is working, or to research into an area that you plan to do something in. No matter what the reason behind the survey may be there is a framework that should be worked from in order to create a successful one.

The questions
The biggest aspect to keep in mind is what you want to gain from the survey. If for example you want to hear from patients how well they feel the standard of care is in the hospital then ask the type of questions that will enable you to find this out. Think about whether you want to use open questions or ones that are multiple choice, or a combination of both. The questions you ask should always lead you to a conclusion that you can work from.

Who will you ask?
Your target group for the survey is particularly important and it has to be people who are relevant to the study. The group may be a large one and if this is the case you can only really take a sample of them. If you are taking a sample then the key is to give a fair representation of the overall group so do not be selective in who you ask, keep it random. The higher the amount of people you ask the better indication it will give of that particular population’s habits and feelings on a certain topic.

The results
Tallying
When you are satisfied that you have obtained data from a sufficient amount of people you should then use a tally to add up the results. A tally is a simple way of recording the answers if you are working from paper but if you are using more advanced technology then this can be done automatically. Touch screens or even online click surveys (mainly in questionnaires) can be very useful and they are a modern way of having participants register their answers.

Displaying the findings
Once you have worked out the data from your results you can start to set out how you will show your findings to people. Bar charts are a traditional method of doing this, as are pie charts, and they are a simple and effective way of showing the largest section of answers with regard to the specific choices you gave to the participants.
