5 Tips to Help you Achieve your Dreams

What’s the difference in people who achieve the things they strive for and those who never seem to go beyond wishing? Is there a difference? Are some people just luckier than others?

Luck and opportunity certainly play a part in success, but people can also do things to create those opportunities. Here are a few steps you can take that will bring you closer to achieving the things you’ve always dreamt about. The size and scope of your dream is not an issue; no dream is “too big” or “too small.” Whether it’s starting your own business, travelling around the world, learning a new language or any other ambition, these five steps are sure to bring you closer to making those dreams a reality.

1. Write it down

Write a little or a lot. Maybe you’ve always wanted to be a teacher. Here’s where you get specific. What kind of teacher? What age group? What will you specialise in? Suddenly you will begin to see all the possibilities of your dream. This exercise helps you to solidify the parameters of your dream and make it seem real.

2. Break your dream into smaller steps

What are all the things you need to do to achieve this dream? This is a good time for brainstorming. For example, if you’re dreaming of being a teacher, you may need to return to school for certifications or to learn more about a particular subject area. The next question you’ll ask yourself is what steps you need to take to return to school. Once you’ve done your brainstorming, you can organise your smaller steps into to-do lists. This leads to the next step.

3. Give yourself small rewards along the way

You know best what will motivate you. For some, it will be the sense of accomplishment itself; others will get that extra push from promising themselves treats. These treats can range from a few episodes of a favorite television show for completing a small task to a special night out or even a holiday to celebrate bigger achievements. Rewards can be particularly important in keeping you motivated if the dream you’re striving toward takes a while to reach.

4. Visualize your success

It takes a lot more than positive thinking to achieve things, but belief in yourself is crucial. Imagine yourself holding that published novel, dancing on the stage in the ballet or completing that driving course. The more you picture it, the more it will seem probable, and the more probable it seems, the more confident you will be as you work to achieve your goals.

5. Tell other people about your dreams

This one seems tricky because we all know people who talk endlessly about what they are going to do someday, yet they never seem to accomplish anything. However, the fault lies not in talking about the dream, but in only talking about it without any action to back it up. Sharing your dream with a few supportive loved ones can make you more accountable.
